I was interviewed yesterday by CRN about the 25th Anniversary of the Mac. Here's the article:
Happy Anniversary, Mac. Now Here's How To Make Us Happy
Not many things in technology last 25 years - companies, product lines, or even ideas - but the Mac has. Those 25 years haven't been without it's ups and downs, just like us:
Things were exciting at the birth of Mac (just watch this video), and the first few years were filled with eager anticipation as it began to do great new things.
A decade in, the Mac was learning the ropes, trying compete with the other kids, but still trying to figure out its place in the world. Then came adolescence.
Experimentation. Hooking up with other strange bedfellows. Cloning. Crazy stuff. Trying all kinds of new radical ideas, most of them not working. Meanwhile, the rest of the kids were going to school and getting an education. The Mac? That crazy, broke art student tripped out on "insanely great" stuff.
But somewhere along the way, Mac got famous. Sharpened up. Gotten a name for himself. Sometimes, he even finds himself in corporate meetings, where he feels, well, a little out of place - even if he looks pretty darn sharp in his sleek threads.
Now what? Mac is at a crossroads: go to work like the rest, or continue being an "artist." Maybe try to do both. All while under the tutelage of his father, Steve (talk about overbearing!).
Happy Birthday, Mac. Good luck on your next steps in life and may they be fruitful for all of us.
